Wharton's Summer Public Interest Fund (SPIF) was established in 1998 to help members of the 1st year class pursue summer internships in public interest areas (ranging from international development to environmental protection to nonprofit community service organizations) by supplementing their summer salaries. SPIF is part of a larger effort to involve Wharton students in efforts and careers that find innovative and effective solutions to social problems. The success and scope of this particular endeavor depends entirely on the support and generosity of the Wharton first-year student body. The Summer Public Interest Fund is financed by voluntary student donations. We understand that for many, the current economic situaion changes your ability to give. Traditionally students have given 1 to 2% of their summer salaries to SPIF and last year the average donation was $95.*
The mission of the Summer Public Interest Fund (SPIF) is to encourage and support first-year students who wish to pursue careers in areas that serve the public good by supplementing their summer salaries. The fund, financed by fellow classmates, represents an important commitment by the Wharton community to those students who work in the public interest. SPIF is intended to contribute toward, but not necessarily fully support students' public interest internships. This year, participation with SPIF through donations is particulary important because SPIF will be reaching out to potential corporate and alumni donors and a strong student participation rate is key to ensuring those types of partnerships.
SPIF activities include its spring pledge drive; fall collection drive; recruitment, collection and evaluation of applications for SPIF grants, and meetings and information sessions to support the above activities.
* This year's minimum donation is $30.
